Do you need a daycare license?
What are the requirements? How much does it cost? If you are looking into opening a daycare center either inside your home or outside of your home, you are probably wondering about licensing. The problem with licensing is that there is no uniform way to go about it. The licensing requirements for daycare centers and providers vary from one state to the next.
The best place to start, if you simply are not sure is with the Department of Children and Family Service in your local area. They are the ones who typically take care of the daycare license and can direct you on the right path. They have packets that they can and will send interested people about starting a daycare and how to go about getting licensed.
In some areas, if you intend to start a daycare, in or outside of your home, you may be required to have a license. In other areas, you may only have to have a license if you are watching children that are in no way related to you. Yet in other areas, you may only be required to be licensed if you are watching more than a set number of children and this number will include your own children as well.
You see it varies so much from one place to the next that it is ultimately difficult to nail down who does and does not need a license. Therefore, you need to contact your local DCFS (Department of Children and Family Service) and determine if you are required to get a daycare license before you begin. If you are required to get a license, you will have to go through inspections and meeting their criteria before you can get your license.
